Questions and Answers

What is lymph fluid and the lymphatic system

Lymph fluid is a clear body fluid containing infection-fighting white blood cells as well as fats and proteins. The lymphatic system works with the immune system by helping the body to remove toxins, bacteria and excess water. The lymphatic system is a network of veins and capillaries similar to the circulatory system, and this network helps to transport the unwanted toxins, waste and excess water from the tissues back into the bloodstream, where it is then transported for removal via the liver or kidneys and disposed of.

What does the treatment involve?

This treatment is often referred to as a massage, however it is very unlike a regular massage. It is very light and gentle movement of the skin, whereby the therapist acts as a pump in manual movement of the lymph fluid which sits between the skin and the muscle.

Is this a massage?

This treatment is often referred to as a massage, however it is not. It is quite relaxing, the treatment involves light and gentle movements over the skin with just enough pressure to move the lymph fluid which lies between the skin and the muscle. Using a gentle pumping action the trained therapist encourages lymph fluid flow toward lymph nodes assisting in removal of excess fluid, toxins and bacteria in the system.

Is MLD recommended by doctors?

Yes it is. Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a specialised treatment for people who suffer from lipoedema, lymphoedema, water retention or swollen, puffy arms or legs. Surgeons usually recommend a series of MLD sessions to help speed up and enhance recovery from cosmetic surgery, including liposuction, tummy tucks or abdominoplasty. It is also recommended by Doctors and Surgeons to help drain excess fluid should a seroma develop post surgery. Regular MLD sessions help cancer patients who have had lymph nodes removed. Did you know regular MLD sessions boosts your immune system too?
